weeklong workshop

Taking it to the Streets is a week-long workshop bringing 20 young artists, age 13-16 to Dallas Contemporary. In keeping with our mission of educating the public about contemporary art and artists as well as outreach to young audiences.

This program engages students in a creative experience exploring all aspects of a working artists' process, from inspiration and research to construction, design, and exhibition. A master artist, local artists, and teaching assistant will lead daily sessions.

The program will consist of three phases. The first phase will be an introduction to a professional graffiti artist/ master teacher. Phase two will engage students in an exploration of basic graffiti techniques such as silkscreen, stencil, and collage. The master teacher will facilitate daily sessions providing one-on-one critiques of works in progress and overall group critiques.

In addition, exhibiting artists will host a session during the workshop. Throughout the workshop, students will be challenged to manipulate the arts media and utilize visual thinking strategies. They will find content and inspiration from their own lives, their community and DC's neighborhood. The last phase of the program will challenge the students to create individual and collaborative works.

outreach workshop

Taking it 2 the Streets is designed for summer or after school programs to connect students to contemporary art. It is an outreach program that is held both off-site and on-site. This program strengthens and expands our commitment to learning and youth partnerships. This program is scalable for students in elementary- middle school.

Day 1: Teaching artists travel to a local organization (Parks and Recreation Centers, YMCAs, Girls Inc., etc) to engage students in an hour-long workshop that introduces a key concept in a current exhibition at Dallas Contemporary. This summer students will be introduced to street art.

Day 2: Students embark on an interactive journey exploring works at Dallas Contemporary. This summer workshop spotlights Sour Grapes, Rest in Power. Dallas Contemporary's on-site workshop encourages students to discover, question, and explore a basic graffiti technique such as silkscreen, stencil, and collage.
