creativity in the kitchen

we enlisted our friend alex snodgrass from @thedefineddish to provide us with some culinary creativity as we navigate these days at home. our deputy director, carolina alvarez-mathies chats with alex about creativity, collecting + kids. plus alex shares some of her favorite recipes!

Alex, we're so excited to try your recipes— thank you for contributing to #dcfromhome!
Here at Dallas Contemporary we see igniting creativity as one of our greater roles as museum, and I am curious, what sparks creativity in you?

So many things spark creativity in me— it can be as big as travel, exploring new cultures and the unique flavors that they use. Or, it could be as simple as diving into my pantry— exploring what I have in my kitchen— and creating something fantastic out of everyday ingredients.

From having visited your home, I know you and your husband are contemporary art collectors, with a great focus on Texas artists. Can you tell me a bit about how you guys started collecting and any advice you can offer young collectors?

Collecting art together is so special to us. Aside from the beauty it brings our home, each of the pieces that we have tell a story that we hold dear to our hearts. We bought our first piece of art on our first wedding anniversary as a gift to our home together. We selected something that we both were very excited about and something that worked in our budget. It brought us so much joy to know that we bought that piece together to enjoy + we loved sharing about the piece with our friends and family that would come over. Once you have that moment with art, you can't stop. Now all we want to do is buy art!! My advice is to find art galleries that you love and creating a relationship with them so that you can keep in touch with what is new and always keep your eyes peeled for fantastic pieces. When you see one that you love, you'll know you can't live without it.

I also might mention that my husband, Clayton, is the real art lover in our home. I have him to thank for helping me become an art lover myself. I also have to tell him no. He wants to buy every piece of beautiful art that he sees. haha

Your daughters are adorable, we love seeing them on your feed. How do you encourage artistic expression in them?

I think one of the easiest ways to encourage artistic expression is letting little ones dress themselves. I've always embraced letting my kids dress themselves and I think that, alone, encourages them to be unique and express themselves! I am also their biggest fan and praise them for being an individual!
